This project was carried out by the Frederikssund Friendship Association.
Frederikssund is an average sized Danish municipality with around 18.000
citizens, situated 43 kilometers from Copenhagen and close to the Roskilde
Fjord.
Frederikssund is a so-called Viking City, it means that the city is close to the
waterfront and our historical background plays a certain role in our daily
cultural life.
The idea of the project was to attract to Denmark people from the former Soviet
Union such as Lithuania, Russia, Ukraine, from other countries of the Eastern
Europe such as Poland, Romania Hungary and from the USA to discuss the various
experiences people have learned through the last 10 years.
We are addressing ourselves to people who are interested in the transition
process due to the introduction of democracy and market economy and who want to
discuss the cultural and human issues in relation to that.

The project started on Friday the 23rd of June 2000 and ended on Monday the 3rd
of July 2000. The first event was the participation in the Midsummer Eve,
attending the Viking Play, and witnessing the Mid-summer Eve bonfire. Members
of the Friendship Association were also participating.

We offered the following to the participants:
10 days stay in Frederikssund, where 5 days were spent in our local Cultural
House called "Elvaerket" (or in English: "Power
Station") and 5 days - living with families in Frederikssund.
Apart from the accommodation, meals were provided and expenses were covered for
local transport and cultural events, which are parts of the programme. The
participants were expected to cover their own international travel expenses,
visa and pocket money.
Our association got some funding covering some of these expenses. We helped the
participants with visa applications (invitation).

- Exchange of our different experiences with democracy based on both Danes
and our guests' experiences.
